FAQ
What is a Class "D" Security License, and how do I get it?
The Class “D” license is the foundational credential required to work as an unarmed security officer in Florida. To obtain it, you must:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien.
Successfully complete a 40-hour training course at a state-approved Class “DS” security school.
Pass a criminal background check (including fingerprinting) and submit an application to FDACS.
Do Florida security licenses expire, and is continuing education required?
Yes. Both licenses require regular attention to stay valid:
Class “D” License: Valid for 2 years and must be renewed through FDACS. No mandatory continuing education hours are required for standard renewal, though advanced certifications are highly recommended.
Class “G” License: Valid for 2 years, but requires a mandatory 4-hour annual firearm recertification and range qualification each year to maintain your armed status.
How long does it take to get my physical license after completing training?
Once you complete your course and submit your application, digital fingerprints, and state fees online (which is the fastest route), the state typically processes clean applications within 5 to 10 business days. Mail-in applications can take up to 4 to 6 weeks.
How do I get an armed security license (Class "G") in Florida?
To work as an armed guard, you must first have (or be concurrently applying for) your Class “D” license. In addition, you must complete a 28-hour Class “G” training course, which includes classroom instruction on firearms laws and use of force, followed by practical range qualification with a licensed firearms instructor.
What background check issues will disqualify me from getting a license?
FDACS will deny applications for individuals with felony convictions, certain drug-related offenses, or misdemeanors involving “moral turpitude” (such as fraud, perjury, or theft). A history of domestic violence convictions will also disqualify you from obtaining a Class “G” armed license.
What are the legal requirements for hiring armed vs. unarmed security guards in Florida?
In Florida, all security officers must be licensed through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Unarmed guards must hold a valid Class “D” license, while armed guards must hold both a Class “D” and a Class “G” (Statewide Firearm) license. As a client, you should always verify that the security agency itself holds a valid Class “B” Security Agency License.
